Should we celebrate or hold a wake for this last wine from a great vineyard?
It is proper and fitting that in its 40th year, these grand old vines were sent into retirement, having made there best wine from a remarkable vintage. Planted in 1967, adjacent to our historic HMR Pinot Noir, the Cabernet block was situated in a lower elevation section of the property at 1600 feet.
Compromised in their old age, these gnarled stalwarts yielded only 5 barrels from 13 acres. Perfectly cellared, it now shows a Bordeaux elegance, a melding of cherry-like fruit, violet pastille, graphite minerality and dark chocolate, enlivened by juicy acidity. Drink now through 2017. Only 122 cases made.
