Adelaida’s family owned vineyards include six distinct properties totaling 172 acres in the craggy hillside terrain of Paso Robles’ west side. Only 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean these are steep and elevated sites (1500 – 1900 feet), characterized by chalk rock limestone soils. Afternoon blasts of coastal air create a daily micro-climate that swings 40-50 degrees. Stressed vines produce low yields of precise flavors.
Vintage 2012 presented many challenges. An extreme heat wave hit the Paso Robles region in August, which elevated “brix” sugar levels and concurrently lowered natural fruit acids. With this wine, always a blend, we were able to add the necessary vibrancy through the addition of Picpoul Blanc, an obscure white varietal planted in Adelaida’s Anna’s Estate Vineyard. The traditional Roussanne and Grenache Blanc are present in the blend as well as Viognier, all contributing richness, viscosity and the impression of sweet orchard fruit. Picpoul brings a crisp citrus edge, balancing all the components. Each variety was handled separately, a combination of tank and barrel fermentations with wines resting on their lees for 10 months. The complex aromatics show their best served slightly chilled, not overly cold. Drink now thru 2015.
