The Don 2008 benefited from 4 years in neutral oak barrels. Extremely supple, the longer ageing in barrel qualifies it for what is called “Late Bottled Vintage Port” status. Fortified with a two-year-old grape brandy sourced from St. George Spirits, the finished wine shows an opaque, dark ruby robe with a bouquet of ripe plums and tiramisu, while the flavors reflect a blackberry extract with notes of black licorice. Convincingly mature, the wine and brandy integration is harmonious and the weight and liqueur-like richness is balanced.
This new release is a blend of both 2008 and 2009 vintages (50/50 muscat and viognier). Captivating aromas of ripe honeydew melon, wildflowers and freshly made honey lead to a clean palate of sweet apricots. Overall it is a rich and layered wine with a lasting peach finish. Deserving to stand on its own merits or served along side a fruit cobbler. Best served slightly chilled.
