Vineyards & Winemaking at Adelaida

Adelaida truly began with Don and Elizabeth’s dedication to the land. The couple’s search for breathing room ended in 1970 when they found the idyllic Hilltop Ranch. The property would later become the heart of the Adelaida District AVA. The Van Steenwyk’s love for this area stemmed from its potential and unique microclimate.

Today, Adelaida’s seven meticulous vineyards span across distinct areas of mountainous terrain characterized by chalk-rock limestone soils, afternoon blasts of cool coastal air, and a daily 40 to 50 degree temperature swing. These unique and varied locations led to specifically designated grape varietals. By taking advantage of the unique soil, elevation, and microclimates on the property, Adelaida maximizes fruit quality and expression of site in the final wines.
